Nine million people have seen the video…I wonder how many actually were inspired to travel more and how many simply said..”I sure wish I could do that…we should do that someday???” Matt is another great example of how Passion Before Paycheck turns into a dream come true and a paycheck that he never thought was possible by just traveling…here is a segment from his website… Where the Hell is Matt?
“Matt is a 30-year-old deadbeat from Connecticut who used to think that all he ever wanted to do in life was make and play video games. He achieved this goal pretty early and enjoyed it for a while, but eventually realized there might be other stuff he was missing out on. In February of 2003, he quit his job in Brisbane, Australia and used the money he’d saved to wander around the planet until it ran out. He made this site so he could keep his family and friends updated about where he is.
A few months into his trip, a travel buddy gave Matt the idea of dancing everywhere he went and recording it on his camera. This turned out to be a very good idea. Now Matt is quasi-famous as “That guy who dances on the Internet. No, not that guy. The other one. No, not him either. I’ll send you the link. It’s funny.”
The response to the first video brought Matt to the attention of the nice people at Stride long-lasting gum. They asked Matt if he’d be interested in taking another trip around the world to make a new video. Matt asked if they’d be paying for it. They said yes. Matt thought this sounded like another very good idea.
At the end of 2005, Matt left on a 6 month trip through 39 countries on all 7 continents. In that time, he danced a great deal.”
How many times have you told yourself that you should go traveling or that you should get out and see the world? Too many times? Do you own a passport yet? Crazy as it might seem there are only about 25% of Americans that have a valid passport. Europeans have a percentage near 90%.
The world is an amazing place. I recently filled in a country by country map of the world (including states) on my Facebook Page. Before I did this I felt like I was a world traveler. I had been to Japan for snowboarding, all over Europe for BASE Jumping, to Australia to chase after my soon to be wife and then to South Africa because that is where she was born.
After filling in 49 of the 50 US States, the above countries, plus a few more I realized something profound. I had not even made a drop in the bucket in this amazing world. The Facebook map claims that I have seen 20% of the world…that leaves 80% still yet to be explored by my own eyes.
I have probably traveled more than most Americans that have passports (not including business travelers) and I still feel I have not seen the world.
We live in a society where we have attachments to so many things. Stuff that we use…sometimes and that eventually we end up selling at a yard sale. If you are using that word “should” in your internal dialogue then you need to recognize this and take action. The word “should” is a desired outcome, but you have roadblocks that are stopping you. Turn that should into a “Yes I will!” and turn your desires into actual events.
Matt has inspired me again to make sure that traveling is apart of my life, my soul and my being. Thank you Matt for the inspiration.
