I’m a huge believer that we have hope inside of us all, but it is becoming more and more difficult to realize it and share it, but only because of ourselves. We are moving at the speed of life and in the process of this fast paced, ever busy schedule, we lose ourselves and with it, any vestige of the hopeful dreamer we all once were. Think about a time when you were a child…what did you want to be when you ‘grew up’?
How many times did that picture change? How many times did you get excited over the possibilities, all right in front of you? What happened? When was the last time you put focus into who you are, what you offer to this place we call our life? How will you take it back or move it forward? What imprint will you leave here when it’s all said and done?
I’ve discovered that in one simple action, we can effect hope and a belief in oneself with one action. Be Present. By simply connecting with others, making eye contact, really listening to a person and being authentic – REALLY BEING PRESENT – we can effect ourselves and others in a very real and dynamic way.
I had a gentleman come into my store recently, looking to find a book to debate Catholicism vs. Evangelicalism. He works with a fellow who is of a different religion that him, and he had it in his mind that he wanted to have more information so that he could have this debate with him. Hmmmm, OK? I could have left it at that, show him what I had, picked out something to fulfill that request and send him on his way. Instead, I introduced myself to him, asked him his name and began to ask him questions that dug deeper. In the heart of it, I simply looked him right in the eye, and in listening to what he was NOT saying, I finally asked him, “George, what do you REALLY want?” I invited him to sit down and minutes later, he shared with me that he came to Canada after leaving his country as an Israeli soldier. He had to kill people there, told me of the life he was forced to live there and he came here with a desire to stat over, but feels he is not worth it, that he is a bad person because he killed. WOW. This is not about buying a book to debate Catholicism…not even close.
In choosing to take the time, really see George and in doing so, see into his heart, he was able to trust me enough to share this fear with me and the desire to be free from it. It was amazing. So, at the end of all of this, and this is just ONE story out of hundred’s I’ve had the privilege to be a part of, what is my passion? Yea, it’s not about the job at all. It’s about purpose. It’s about living out my story with authenticity and passion and verve. And now, as I strive to educate myself more so I can help others in propelling them forward to live out their stories authentically, I am more and more each day, learning to live my story out passionately purposeful.
Thank you so much for your spark of passion food for me Kenyon.
Keep serving as you do – your purpose is clearly visible.
Have a really awesome day.
